If you've ever bought a beautiful necklace that turned dark or left your skin green after two weeks, you're not alone. That's why, at Atelier 21, all our pieces are made of stainless steel. But does stainless steel actually tarnish?
The short answer: no
Stainless steel contains chromium, which creates an invisible protective layer on the surface of the metal. This layer prevents oxidation, so the piece does not tarnish or rust with normal use — even in contact with sweat or water.
Stainless steel vs. silver vs. brass
- Silver: it's beautiful, but it oxidizes with air and humidity and needs to be cleaned frequently.
- Brass and common alloys: they are inexpensive, but tend to tarnish quickly and can leave green marks on the skin.
- Stainless steel: resistant, durable, and designed for daily wear. It keeps its color and shine for much longer.
What about gold-plated pieces?
Our gold pieces have an 18K gold plating over stainless steel. The steel base provides resistance and the plating gives that luminous golden tone. With a few simple care steps, the gold remains beautiful for a long time.
Tips for longer-lasting shine
- Apply perfume and creams before putting on your jewelry.
- Store each piece separately, in a pouch or box, to avoid scratching.
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after use.
